A Splash of Sisterhood in Moonee Valley

Every Sunday evening, the sound of over eighty culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women chatting, swimming and splashing about reverberates through Ascot Vale Leisure Centre.

These women from the Moonee Valley community wouldn’t miss a Women’s Only recreational swim session – a weekly event from 8pm to 10pm – which allows women, girls and boys under seven exclusive access to Ascot Vale Leisure Centre’s aquatic area, in an environment that is safe and comfortable for them.

Zuhre Koyu, pictured above (right) with Nilufer Kurtuldu (left), is a CALD community member and regular attendee who says these nights have been a game changer for her.

“The moment I step into the pool area, I feel an overwhelming sense of safety and security. It’s the perfect environment to stay active, both mentally and physically, without any concerns. The team at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre has created a welcoming space for women of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy their time in the water,” Koyu said.

“I particularly enjoy unwinding in the sauna after a session of water aerobics or a few laps in the pool. It’s the perfect way to relieve stress and rejuvenate after a long day. The female-only setting allows me to relax and focus on my health and wellness without any distractions.

“I am incredibly grateful to the Ascot Vale Leisure Centre for offering this valuable service. It’s not just about swimming; it’s about community, support, and empowerment. I look forward to each session and can’t thank the team enough for providing this safe haven for women. Thank you for making a positive impact on my life and the lives of so many other women,” concluded Koyu.

In addition to helping CALD women feel comfortable spending time in the water, the Women Only nights offer swimming lessons within the program, which are structured in line with the GOswim curriculum.

Amy Cross, MOVE Moonee Valley Area Manager says “The Women’s Only Nights initiative – run by our amazing female team members on site – was developed in response to the barriers women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds face regarding water participation.

“I’m beyond pleased that we are able to not only provide a culturally safe environment for CALD women on a Sunday evening, but also that we are able to address the concerns of some these women when it comes to their swimming ability.

“Given CALD communities are at greater risk of drowning due to cultural differences in swimming ability and water safety knowledge, it’s important that we address this issue to keep everyone in our community, no matter their background, safe around water.

This program is a testament to the dedication and commitment of Ascot Vale Leisure Centre to providing safe and inclusive recreational opportunities for all community members.
